Requirements for Building your Bedroom Loft Conversion
The ceiling height as well as the size and shape of your loft, are important factors to consider. If the ceiling height is 2.3 meters, that would be an ideal measurement for a comfortable living space. For a kitchen or bathroom, the ceiling height will need to vary. The height can be a peak in the center like an alcove or attic and does not need to cover the entire room. It is, however, essential to determine how much overhead space is appropriate to everyone’s height when standing and walking. If a ceiling is lower it can work for a bathroom, hallway, kitchen, closet or pantry.
To determine this, simply enter your loft space and check the height in the center of the space. You will need about eight feet ideally, although seven feet can often accommodate nicely as well.
Safety
It is important to consider safety when converting your loft bedroom as well. Your room will need to have a safe way to exit the room in the event of a fire or another disaster, such as an earthquake or tornado. This means a fixed staircase should be created that fits in with all regulations in regards to height, stair width, banisters and pitch of the stairwell. All of this should be done with a foreman or contractor to ensure safety and that standards are met and approved by your county. Although you do not need any planning permission, since you are building with an existing space it is still a good idea to enlist a professional with expertise in converting your loft bedroom.
Bedroom Design
The design of your bedroom will also add so much to the loft conversion. Choose a paint color that is light to give the appearance of a larger space. Warm wooden features and darker accents will make your conversion have an incredible impact.
The layout is important. If your newly converted bedroom has a ridge in the center, you will want to place your bed under it to allow space on either side for nightstands. This also will let you have amazing light come in, by adding a skylight to the converted bedroom.
If the ridge is not in the center take advantage of the skewed ceiling, by balancing either side with a bedroom and en suite.
